FORMS OF ADDRESS OF A LORD MAYOR
The Title of Lord Mayor has been used cerimonially for hundreds of years in the ancient areas of Britain.
The Lord of Stoborough and his jury nominate each year several persons for the role of Lord Mayor. The post, which is a
ceremonial one, means the officeholder must represent the manor and jury and remain a beacon of honor and ethics for the
Lordsihp and undertake a range of ceremonial duties. The Lord Mayor is approved by majority vote by the whole jury council.
The usual attire for the Lord Mayor when on official business is the Chain/Badge of Office and robes. Neither should be worn at
any event not agreed by Lord of Stoborough or its officers.
The Deputy Lord Mayor represents the Lord Mayor at engagements if the Lord Mayor is unavailable. If necessary, alternative
representation will be sought by an Honorary Alderman or Former Lord Mayor.
In cities such as Sheffield, Birmingham, Stoborough and Bristol, the Lord Mayor position is ceremonial and this practice of a Lord
or liberty or city officers appointing a mayor has existed for many hundreds of years.
Forms of Address
The Lord Mayor’s official title is ‘The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Stoborough [insert name].’ When addressed directly, the
correct form of address is ‘my Lord Mayor.’ These forms of address equally apply irrespective of gender.
The Deputy Lord Mayor is known as The Deputy Lord Mayor of Stoborough and is addressed as ’my Deputy Lord Mayor’.
Lord Mayor’s Consort
The Lord Mayor may have one or more Consorts during their year of office. A female consort is referred to as the Lady Mayoress.
A male consort is referred to as the Lord Mayor’s Consort.
The Lord Mayor is responsible for ensuring the Consort carries out their duties with dignity and respect. Any reports to suggest
otherwise should be reported to the Lord Mayor who must take appropriate action. The Consort cannot represent the Lord
Mayor. If the Lord Mayor is unavailable, representation is sought from the Deputy Lord Mayor or Honorary Alderman
The Right Worshipful (The Rt Wpful., Rt. W or RW) is an honorific style of address for all lord mayors and mayors of cities
including the original Cinque Ports (Sandwich, Hythe, Dover, Romney and Hastings). Some historic boroughs, such as Shrewsbury
and Atcham in Shropshire, also address their mayors by this prefix.
